Can Dogs Eat Kiwi: Feeding Guideline and Health Concerns

We can’t deny the fact that dogs can eat kiwi. However, if you’re a dog owner, you should know that there can be some health concerns about feeding your dog kiwi. Kiwi is an excellent source of vitamin C and potassium for your furry doggo but it can also give your pup gastrointestinal problems. In this article, we’ll discuss how to feed kiwi to your furry friend properly and whether or not they can eat them at all!

Is kiwi fruit safe for dogs?

What many people don’t know is that kiwi fruit is actually safe for dogs. Many people are under the impression that it’s not, but there are multiple reasons why it’s not only safe but beneficial to your dog. Below you’ll find five reasons why kiwi is safe for dogs and can be a great addition to their diet.

1) Kiwi can help with digestion issues

The fiber found in kiwi helps promote healthy digestion and elimination. It also contains enzymes that aid in breaking down food particles so they can pass through the intestinal tract more easily. These enzymes have also been known to help reduce flatulence in some cases as well as bloating from gas buildup from swallowed air or undigested food.

2) Helps in constipation

Kiwi can also help with constipation, a common problem for many dog owners and their pets alike! The vitamin C found in kiwi can actually act as an antioxidant which helps prevent damage to the colon cells.

3) High levels of water

Additionally, it contains high levels of water so dogs can eat them without having to drink as much water, which can help with the problem of over-consumption and in turn lessens the risks of needing to go outside as often.

4) Helps in diarrhea problem

Kiwi can also be helpful for diarrhea problems when eaten raw because it contains a lot juice that can soothe irritated tissues or dry them out.

 5) High levels of potassium

The high levels of potassium found in kiwi can also be helpful for dogs that are having problems with low potassium levels which can lead to muscle weakness.

5 Risks of offering kiwi to canines

Kiwi fruit is a healthy snack for people, but they are risky for dogs. Kiwi contains vitamin C and potassium, but it also has a high level of acidity that can be dangerous to your dog’s stomach.

Some canines can handle kiwi with no problem, while others are sensitive to the fruit’s high acidity and can’t eat it at all. You may need to monitor your dog for any of these side effects before deciding if they can safely eat kiwi. Here are a few risks associated with offering kiwi to your dog.

  • Loss of appetite – Some dogs can’t digest the fruit properly and may lose their appetite while others can eat it without any side effects at all.
  • Vomiting – If they do vomit, there’s a chance that it will be due to digestive issues caused by the fruit.
  • Choking – While rare, there have been reports of choking due to the size and shape of kiwi slices that can’t be chewed properly by your dog’s canines.
  • Allergic reaction – Dogs can be allergic to the fruit just like humans can, so there’s a chance that kiwi can cause your dog to have an itchy or irritated skin rash.

How should I feed my dog kiwi?

Dogs are carnivores by nature, so they need meat-based proteins.

However, kiwi is a great source of vitamin C for dogs and it’s also low in calories, making it an ideal treat for overweight canines. Now let’s talk about how to feed kiwi to your dog. Use these tips to feed kiwi to your dog.

  • Make sure the kiwi you feed your dog has no seeds or skin on them because these parts contain compounds that can be toxic for dogs when consumed in large amounts. The seeds inside of the fruit are poisonous and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and sometimes even death if ingested by a pet! The skin of the fruit contains person which is known to cause breathing difficulty among other symptoms such as gastrointestinal irritation and red skin lesions.
  • If you can’t peel the fruit, just cut it into long slices and avoid giving them to your dog in large chunks because they can get stuck in their throat!  If you have a small breed of canine or if this is their first time trying kiwi, offer only one slice at a time.

Kiwi is a wonderful and delicious fruit; however, the seeds of the fruit can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or respiratory distress in dogs if ingested. Check out these 3 reasons why you should never feed your dog any kiwi seeds.

  • Kiwi seeds can cause an upset stomach for dogs and lead to vomiting or diarrhea.
  • The seeds may get stuck in their throat and block their airway
  • The fleshy part of a seed isn’t toxic like the shell is – it just expands in their stomachs and makes them feel full.

Can French bulldogs eat kiwi?

French bulldogs have a relatively small stomach, so it’s important not to feed them any whole kiwis. They are able to get by with about 4 or 5 bites of a peeled kiwi with of the rind, depending on the size of their stomach.

Nonetheless, if you are going to give your French bulldog a whole kiwi, make sure that they can’t push open their mouth and digest it all in one go! This will ensure that they don’t suffer an intestinal obstruction and die from suffocation. Many people report success in feeding cut-up pieces (pieces that are constantly falling out) instead without ever having any problem of this nature again.

Can Chihuahua eat kiwi?

Like French bulldogs, the same rule also applies here.

Many small dog breeds, like Chihuahuas, get irritated by the enzymes in raw or unripe fruit. It’s best to feed these pets fruits that are ripe and mashed up to avoid such problems.

Chihuahuas typically have difficulties digesting many foods because their stomach is so short. When you add a day pass of unripe kiwi – which is higher in digestive enzymes than ripe because they’re not evolved to eat it – there’s no wonder why a Chihuahua might be uncomfortable after eating one fresh kiwi. And since they usually don’t tolerate solid foods all that well anyway, it can actually be dangerous for them if they happen to swallow any large chunks when trying to chew it.
